Banner
Name: Banner
Location: San Diego County, About 7 miles east of Julian on Hwy 78
Access: Paved roads, 2wd vehicles OK.
Comments: Founded in 1870 by L.B. Redman, this was a fair sized mining town. There are dozens of mines accessable
by dirt roads off Hwy 78 as it runs through Banner Canyon. Within Banner, a cabin and the original mill are still standing.
Between 1874 and 1926, the town was washed out by floods 3 times, and finally burned down in the 1930s. The current road is a new alignment; the original banner grade is slightly south and runs directly by several mines.
