Name: Eagle Mountain Mine

Location: Riverside County. Take I-10 east to Desert Center. North on 177, watch for Eagle Mountain Road sign.

Access: Paved roads, 2wd vehicles OK.

Comments: This is an iron mine owned and operated by Kaiser Steel. There are rows of mostly empty houses and abandoned schools and stores. Unlike most ghost towns, Eagle Mountain still has a firehouse that is staffed with two firefighters for both structural and wildland fires. The large pits and tailings are worth exploring. Watch for no tresspassing signs; there is a privately run prison in the area.
