Name: Vallecito Stage Stop
Location: San Diego County. Take hwy 78 to the western edge of the Anza Borrego. At Scissors Crossing, head south on the Old Overland Stage Route (paved road). Proceed south and east to Vallecito Stage Station County Park.
Access: Paved roads, 2wd vehicles OK.
Comments: Founded in 1848 by John and Daniel Murphy, prospectors searching for gold in Coyote creek. They never found much, and eventually moved out... but in 1852 a rich vein was found and the town grew quickly. By 1877 the town was mostly abandoned. A few buildings remain, including the Wells Fargo office that served as a stage stop between San Diego and the mining towns along the Colorado River. The Station is maintained by the Park Service and is open to visitors.
