Comments: Trail starts just below Cottowood Campground, leads south to Cottonwood Spring, loops east, north and up to Mastodon Peak (3440') and descends down to Cotton Spring and back to campground, for a total of about 2.5 miles. The Oasis at Cottonwood spring makes a nice rest stop. Mastadon Mine, just below the peak, was active from 1919 to 1932. Do not enter the shafts. On a clear day you can see down to the Salton Sea from the peak. About a mile past the peak are the remains of the village of Winona. Trees planted here in the 1920's provide a shady rest spot on the trail.
