Red Hill Truck Trail

Trailhead Access: Take the I-10 east to Banning. Exit south on Hwy 243. Proceed 18 miles to Pine Cove. Turn west at the Pine Cove gas station, follow the road about .4 miles. The road will turn sharply north and down, and pavement will end. After about 1/4 mile, turn west, and follow the road to the intersection of the Red Hill Truck Trail and The San Jacinto Ridge Road.
Total Distance: 3.52 miles
Elevation Gain/loss: Low point: 4935 feet, High point: 6000 feet
Starts at: 33°45'44"N, 116°44'40"W
Ends at: 33°44'02"N, 116°45'02"W
Comments: Most folks use the paved highway to travel between Pine Cove and Idyllwild, but here is an alternate dirt route. This short but sweet (less than 4 miles total) trail winds down from the pines and cedars into the chapperal, with great views of Hemet Valley along the way. Turning east at the end, the road passes through grassy mountain meadows before ending at the USC extension campus in Idyllwild. US Forest Service rates this trail as easy.
