Comments: Now, I know what you're thinking: driving is illegal in a designated Wilderness Area. Thats usually true, but this road is an exception. Its a narrow corridor, open to vehicles, that loops through the Rodman Mountains. Youll leave the pavement behind when you turn on Camp Rock Road. Continue southeast. At 34°40'21"N, 116°42'28"W, Camp Rock turns suddenly south. Instead, continue straight on OJ228 (Cinder Mine Road). This will curve north, and you will see the cinder cone ahead. Watch for a road branching off to the east at 34°40'39"N, 116°37'20"W. Turn here and proceed just over a mile where the road forks. Take the fork less than a quarter mile to Surprise Tank, and check out the huge area of geoglyphs and petroglyph rock art. The rock drawing are between 1000 and 11000 years old. Now continue to the powerline road and turn left, then left again after about a half mile onto OJ295. Head north through Box Canyon, then left onto the pipeline service road. A short distance will take you to a road headed north again, where you will find an onramp back onto Hwy 40 at 34°48'59"N, 116°36'37"W. SoCalCamping.com rates this trail as easy, with a few moderate bits due to sand.
